BC Projects is pleased to present In The Studio: Randy Wray introducing thirteen works by the artist. Born in North Carolina and currently living and working in New York, Randy Wray employs a broad array of materials and techniques in service of authentic artistic discovery. His approach to painting and sculpture is highly improvisational and fluid as he interacts with materials and images. The artist spends much time looking at his works and reworking elements until he arrives at something unexpected and compelling. The process requires an appetite for risk-taking and change.

Wray’s form of psychic exploration mines unknown realms to manifest mysterious images that are specific but not overly determined. Although they are invented, they are informed by his interests in biology, geology and unexplained phenomena. The works perform as Rorschach tests, conjuring variations of animals, vegetables or minerals, limited only by a viewer's inclinations. They are loaded and emotionally charged, expanding in multiple directions.

Randy Wray received a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and a degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His residencies include the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program.

The artist has exhibited in the United States and abroad including solo shows at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, NC; Camargo Vilaça, São Paulo; White Columns, NY; Derek Eller Gallery, NY; and Greenville County Art Museum, SC. Group exhibitions include MoMA PS1, NY; Cranbrook Art Museum, MI; Socrates Sculpture Park, NY; Kate MacGarry, London; Tibor de Nagy, NY; Feature Inc., NY; and Kohler Arts Center, WI. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Inaugural Irving Sandler Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Gottlieb Grant, a NYFA Painting Fellowship, and a Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant.

Museum collections include the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Greenville County Art Museum, SC; Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro; Museum of Sex, NY; Rubin Museum of Art, NY; and Weatherspoon Art Museum, NC.
